April 26 - The Campfire Trail - Homeless Challenge Anniversary Continued - Utility Control

Day 938 of the Adventure

Continuing on from yesterday's "Homeless Challenge" story. As of the filming of this video, we had not yet built our Utility Control Building. What appears to be a simple shed is much more functional to our homestead than it's appearance would suggest. As we were building it, we had plans for it to house a complete Solar Power System that could serve the entire property. The electrical work would be a slightly complex. It would be designed and built to handle incoming grid power and solar panel power. From there, grid has the option of feeding the inverter to power the cabin or to charge batteries. The grid separates between dedicated circuits and off-grid circuits. In addition, there are two generators available that can feed off-grid circuits, charge batteries or simply be hauled off into the field to power work projects. Why all the complexity? the answer would be..... Options!

As of now, two years later, all of those scenarios have actually occurred from grid power outages, necessary battery recharges due to extended weather conditions and projects too far from the power sources. So far, it's been one of the more versatile and reliable aspects of our place.
