July 30 - Resort Adventures

July 30, 2020
Day 212 - 154 Days to go
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost in the Woods (Colombia/Costa Rica blend)

I've spent the last couple days reflecting on "The Last Resort" project. I've been remembering the process that brought us to purchase it. The Summer was 2012 and we had a pretty good schedule of guests staying with us at Cross Timbers Cabins. The Summer was blazing hot and many potential guests decided against staying because we did not have a pool. Cap'n Ray was our neighbor at the time and had already become a good friend. One day I told him, "Ray! Find us a resort property with a POOL!" two days later he showed up with news he had found one just a mere block away from Cross Timbers. It had a house, seven cabins and a BIG swimming pool. A month later we owned it, Ray and De moved into the house as caretakers of the property and we officially owned two resorts.

Cap'n Ray (I added "Cap'n" to his rank a couple years later) made the place look beautiful with flower plantings and general fussing around the property. The following Spring, he drained the pool and painted it for the upcoming season.

Good Memories remain from those years.

Day 211 - 155 Days to go
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Highlander Grogg (Butterscotch/Rum flavor)

The Last Resort Project is beginning to draw to a close for us. I received news today that the buyers are wanting to wrap things up on the purchase this coming Monday. I have been reflecting on this and have mixed emotions. Mainly, I'm excited to get one more "Iron in the fire" out of the fire. The sale of the old "Hospitality Hill Resort" (a.k.a. "The Last Resort".... and for a short time "The Fisherman's Hide-Out") will allow us to be in a better position for our next Resort "project". The place still holds some significant memories for me. The primary memory was realizing the possibility of owning two resort properties instead of just one. That one notion is what made the difference, I believe, in the success of what we were trying to do. Which was trying to figure out how to make a living with small resorts. The answer was "Own more than One!"

Our nick-named "Last Resort" was a major stepping stone in our journey. Part of me will always feel that we never were able to see it through to the final vision that we had for the place. It's most important role for us was giving us the courage to pursue the next project which was the Treehouse Resort. Hopefully, the new owners will find similar inspiration as they begin their new "Resort Adventure"

Day 210 - 156 Days to go
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost on the Trail (Guatemala)

"The Kid" is BACK and has yet another trophy story to tell. This time it was a nice looking Trout. I'm not too sure who was prouder, the Kid or the Dad. Being a kid once (a long time ago) and being a Dad. I'm pretty sure that the Dad was probably the most excited in this picture.

Kid Fishing..... Very Few things in life get much better!

Day 208 - 158 Days to go
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost up the Creek (Colombia)

I'm always amused when I have folks in the tackle shop arguing with me over the absence of Bass, Crappies, Catfish and other fish species in Lake Taneycomo. Yes, the water turned cold upon the completion of Table Rock Dam some 70 years ago. But, it's still the White River and everything that was ever there is still there. Most of it simply gets ignored. Today a tackle shop customer came in bragging about a nice White Bass he caught out here, and it was indeed very nice.

The "Helpful" side of me always wants to insure customers that there is more than Trout in our lake. The ornery part of me sometimes simply agrees with them and let them live their lives in oblivion to the bountiful abundance of other "non-Trout" fishing that's available in this water.

We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll enjoy the fishing here every chance I get!

Day 207 - 159 Days to go
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: B52 (Kahlua/Irish Cream/Amaretto flavor)

Leave it to the kids to get on to the biggest fish. This young man was fishing the rest of the family under the table this week . He not only looked the part, he had the goods! He talked fishing, talked structure, talked rigging and then went out and showed everyone just how it's done.

I think the Pro's may have to be on notice when this guy gets a little older.

Day 206 - 160 Days to go
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost in the Woods (Colombia/Costa Rica)

The Resort Adventure for me is a Life Experience. As a business, it's a pretty good way of making a living. As a life........ It's a really good way to live a life. The Summertime boat rental part of the "Adventure" is a busy one. This year especially. It's literally been an "All Boats - Every Day" kind of affair. This is good for business, but it's also good for realizing how fortunate we are to have this life. I don't necessarily have to drive out onto the lake every day to get boats ready, but then again.....

It's mornings like this that causes me to sit back in the Captain's Seat, take a sip of hot fresh coffee and smile as I think of the missing sound of a time clock I didn't punch this morning. THEN........ Another sip of of coffee!

That...... Is the Resort Adventure!
