January 22 - Resort Adventures

January 22, 2021
Day 22 -  343 Days To Go
40 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost up the Creek (Sumatra)

There are things that you do, or things that you see that pretty much defy explanation. Or at lease defy description.....without a video anyway. Such is the case with an experience in the back yard of the Resort today. Solutions to problems come in all shapes and sizes. This one included starting fluid, a match and a big stick of firewood.

This story began with the delivery of that big white bundle you see on the ground. (We'll discuss that tomorrow) The delivery guys didn't notice the tire being nearly flat on their fork lift. In the twisting maneuver to get out from under the bundle, it rolled the tire right off the rim. I was personally at a loss for how they could get it back on without calling in a service truck. They attempted a couple of fixes without success. Finally, they resorted to the Ether, lighter and big stick method.

Now I have seen this done on youtube videos before. (Mostly of the "Here, Hold my Beer variety) Nevertheless, They appeared to know what they were doing. Me, leaning toward the side of caution and skepticism, I got myself ready to record a video. The exact process is: 1. spray a liberal amount of ether into the tire cavity. 2. Light it with a lighter, 3. Just as it ignites, hit it with something big enough to help the bead seal as the explosion occurs inside the tire.

All went exactly as planned up to the "Whack it with a stick" part. The explosion and the stick whack was simultaneous. The rapid inflation of the tire by the ignition of the ether was sufficient to bounce the tree limb back at it's handler with enough force to nearly knock him off his feet. NOW..... he's fine but will be sporting a goose egg for a day as a banner of bravery. A sort of "Participation Award" if you will.

It's not every day you get to employ fire and explosions to fix your woe's. So today was a special day for all of us at the Resort. I can't imagine we will top this any time soon. You can watch the whole thing in the video below.

January 20 - Resort Adventures

January 20, 2021
Day 20 -  345 Days To Go
42 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost on the Trail (Guatemala)

In the middle of moving more loads of things to the Marina Inn today, I ended up at the treehouses picking up a few things. We have a couple of projects going on there. One of them is a surprise. It was delivered about a week ago and needs a few special additions to be complete. The other big project is the current treehouse being built. The looks of it changes every day. The outward appearance is very rustic, which will match the unique theme. Mitch offered up a suggestion for the name and I think the consensus around the resort agrees with it. That too will remain a secret for a little while yet. Once we reach a point where we can no longer avoid the decorations showing up in the pictures, we'll announce it. So far, just like all the others, this one is becoming our favorite one yet!

I think the treehouses are a wonderful example of what it means to be a resort. They offer all of the crazy things we dream about in an "Adventure Experience". Things we can never really justify building in our back yards. Things we long to do or try but doesn't make sense in a practical lifestyle. Spending a weekend in a treehouse gives us permission to think like a kid again and, in fact, be a kid again.

Hint: The Clint Eastwood movie "The Outlaw Josie Wales" provided the inspiration for the name.

January 16 - Resort Adventures

January 16, 2021
Day 16 -  349 Days To Go
46 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost up the Creek (Sumatra - Shelley's new favorite)

We had our first guests check in here at that Marina Inn last night.....while it was snowing.... They had their boat, fishing gear and cold weather clothing with them as if they were actually going to go out and try to catch a few fish. I didn't say anything to discourage them, but my thoughts trained along the lines of "You guys are crazy". BUT, if there's one thing I've come to appreciate in the resort business, it's NEVER underestimate the determination of a dedicated fisherman.

It's good to see the younger generation keeping up the fishing tradition. Almost all of them are in the "Younger" range to me any more. I remember getting out on the water in cold weather and even going out on the ice for a little bit of fishing through a hole in the top of the lake. These days, I'm content to wait for warmer weather and warmer water. But my hat is off to these hearty fishermen for ignoring the cold to enjoy their sport.

Austin and his buddy Did VERY well. They sent in several pics of some cold water bass. They will have plenty of stories to take home to all their friends who chose to stay in where it's warm this weekend.

January 15, 2021
Day 15 -  350 Days To Go
47 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost on the Lake (Colombia/Sumatra)

And so it begins. We have our first Marina Inn guests. A couple of hearty fishermen are staying with us for the next few days. Technically, we aren't even open yet. We really only have one guest room that is powered up and warm.

This weekend...... That's important! It's been snowing on and off all day, but they both seem to be full of enthusiasm.

We've been busy moving, figuring out where all of the plug-ins, light switches, heater thermostats and all that other stuff is. I'm beginning to gain some enthusiasm myself for the future of the place here. I wish I could find my magic wand, wave it at a few things around here so they would finish themselves up so we could get on with the business of getting ready for Springtime.

January 10 - Resort Adventures

January 10, 2021
Day 10 -  355 Days To Go
50 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost on the Trail (Guatemala)

Today was a big moving day for us at the Marina Inn. Most of the essentials were brought over. Almost. With all of the rush to get repairs and upgrades done and needing tools and equipment for that, none of the fishing tackle from Base Camp Fishing was even touched. Yes. The Marina Inn will be the new home for Base Camp Fishing which is our "on-line" fishing tackle store. And Yes, we will set up a "Walk In" tackle shop here at the resort. I plan to have that ready to go by March 1. Although, there's a lot to get done so we'll see how that goes.

Base Camp Fishing is a spin off from the Base Camp Resort and Cabin Co. brand we started a couple years ago. It seems to always take a back seat to all of the other resort related things we are doing. Nevertheless, we reached a significant milestone with it a couple months ago by getting the initial on-line store set up and functioning. About a week after that got accomplished, we placed the Marina Inn under contract so the fishing tackle kind of took a back seat once again. I was able to get about 20% of our inventory loaded on to the site before it had to go to the back burner again for a bit. I really am planning to pick it up again soon and complete the work on it. You can order now by phone or on-line at 417-234-4394 or www.basecampfishing.com

January 9 - Resort Adventures

January 9, 2021
Day 9 -  356 Days To Go
51 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Ozark Mountain Turtle (Chocolate/Caramel/Pecan flavor)

We spent the day at the Marina Inn still trying to figure out keys and things. Today is our 5th day of ownership. The boys (Dave and Todd) made some repairs to faucets and fixed a few door locks. Tiffany worked with Shelley on housekeeping and laundry. MAINLY, we got the original "owners/managers" unit up and running and tonight we are spending our first night here. It feels good being here. The fireplace is cozy and adds a nice touch to the ambiance.

We have lived at almost every resort we've owned for some length of time. The Fisherman's Hide-Out has been the only one we haven't lived at. It was Only a block or two from both Rainbow Haven Resort and Cross Timbers Cabins so we never felt the need to just live there being so close to the other ones. We are looking forward to getting the Marina Inn up to speed. Moving will dominate our activity for a while but that won't last long. Meanwhile, at 8pm tonight, I'm very content to sit by the fire, watch a little football, sipping some hot Base Camp Coffee and consider all the benefits of a Resort Adventure lifestyle.

I'm okay with that!

OH!!! By the way...... We took delivery of a special item at the treehouses today and while I'm keeping the whole project a secret for now, you won't want to miss the updates as they come out!

January 8, 2021
Day 8 -  357 Days To Go
52 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost in the Woods (Colombia/Costa Rica)

This morning I made my way through the treehouse resort and ran across one of the signature pieces for the current treehouse project. When Mitch located it, I was just a little skeptical. When I saw what he brought home, I changed my mind and thought it was PERFECT!

From the design conception of this treehouse, I insisted that we needed a flat bottomed boat. (Even if I had to build it myself) Fortunately, I won't have to do that. "Followed By Buzzards" has a story of it's own and like almost everything else around here, that piece of the story will just add character and charm to the treehouse experience.
