September 17 - DIY Homestead - Fish Fry's and Treehouse Cabins

Day 351 of the Adventure

Fish Fry Time
After waiting for so many different things to be delivered (or arrive in the store for us to pick up) All of a sudden, everything seems like it's showing up at once. We first got a call yesterday that the tractor parts made it in and were installed. Tractor is now ready to be picked up. Then an email letting us know our woodstove had arrived at the store. While there, the rest of what we needed to finish soffits showed up as well. We've still waiting on the log siding but hey, we got more than enough to keep us busy now for the next two weeks.

Tonight is Fish Fry Night at our treehouses. One of my favorite events by far! I still have not figured out exactly what "triggers" Fish Fry Night, but I don't care, as long as I get the invitation. If you're reading this as one of our DIY Homestead followers, you're probably wondering what's with the treehouses we occasionally talk about. You are IN LUCK if you're reading this, because it's a piece of a great income idea you can implement right on your homestead (if you're that far along) Years ago, we bought some cabins simply because we wanted a quiet place to escape our self-imposed rat-race lifestyle. They were cheap, run down and needed a lot of help. However, once the first one was brought up to "nice" condition, we started getting calls and drive-bys from people who asked if we would rent it to them. After getting our minds around the possibilities of it, we rented a cabin out for a week to some tourists visiting the area. Then did it again and then again. Before long we had a small little cottage industry going renting out nightly cottages (cabins). Within six years, our little nightly cabin renting business had grown to 26 cabins, 89 RV sites, 8 primitive tent campsites and 8 treehouse cabins (which has now grown to 14 treehouse cabins)

I'm not suggesting getting as aggressive as we did because it did become a larger part of our "Rat-Race" and make it even a bigger one. What I would say though is it's worth some consideration if you are looking for ways to boost your income. Whether you are a homestead or an off-grid property, there are people out there who will gladly pay for a unique stay and experience. Of course, there are a lot of considerations to weigh before you would enter into a venture like this, whether it's a cabin or a tent-site, a Yurt or even a treehouse. For the adventuresome Homesteader or Off-Gridder looking for a boost in regular income, it's worth some thought.

I'll elaborate on the whole subject more in future articles, but for now, here's a quick video of one of my favorite treehouses......... Trails End
