Day 439 of the Adventure
I've already made an interesting discovery about our "back-up" heating source. Even though it does it's intended job at keeping the cabin tolerably warm, at night it will slowly lose ground when it's below freezing outside. Last night was the first test at how it would perform if left on it's own. I slept comfortably the entire night but awoke around 6am to a chilly 63 degrees in the cabin. This brings me to my "interesting" discovery. I probably already knew this from Fall and Winter camp-outs from our past. Possibly even from our former wood stove days. Staying in bed when you are comfortably warm is different than staying in bed when there's just enough of a chill to make it impossible to completely relax. That was this morning. After a lame attempt at continuing to sleep, I finally relented and crawled out of bed to build a fire and make coffee. In that order. I'm not really disappointed in the ability to keep things warm. After all, we still do not have the entire cabin insulated yet. That, I'm sure, will improve things. Plus. the electric heat is really our very last option when it comes to keeping things warm around here. The funny part is, for whatever reason, at the same temperature, the wood heat just feels warmer. Plus, it's a lot easier to brew up a pot of coffee on the wood stove than it is on a base board heater! (I won't try that again!)
