Day 462 of the Adventure
During the early morning hours at the cabin, usually between 5:00 am and 6:00 am, a feeding takes place. By that time of the morning, temps in the cabin will have dropped off to the mid 60's which is enough to wake me. It's the sign that the wood stove needs fed. Of course, there have been other feedings during the night but those have consist of a single small chunk of wood tossed in and then jump back into a warm bed. Any more than that and the cabin becomes an oven where no one sleeps. The 5am feeding is where the stove gets several pieces of wood to warm everything up nicely by 6am or 7am. This hearty feeding makes getting out of bed an hour or so later and fixing the morning coffee more tolerable. Many times during this early ritual, I'll sit in the dark by the fire and just let it warm me up. We don't keep the firewood inside the cabin to avoid bugs warming up and crawling out. So, each feeding trip involves a few steps outside in the cold first. The whole routine sounds to be a very obnoxious one. The reality is, it's a comforting exercise. The sky outside is usually very clear. Out here in the woods, the darkness creates a sky-scape of millions of stars. Stars I can see out the back door window from my perch in front of the stove. It's a routine I've become accustomed to and really do enjoy. Feeding an early morning fire in the dark is just one more of the simple pleasures of life in a Cabin in the Woods.
