April 23 - The Campfire Trail - Planting Pennies And Harvesting Dollars

 April 23, 2024

Day 935 of the Adventure

While I'm still on a garden and self-sufficiency tirade, I thought I'd throw one more thought into the ring. Much of my recent rantings have been related to the high prices of buying groceries among other things. I suppose that one of the main reasons we decided to make gardening one of the "center-piece" activities of our backwoods property has to do with costs. Beyond that would be things like better quality, fresher selection and just knowing more about where it came from and what all has been added to it. All are valid reasons to grow your own food. Today I'll simply focus on the cost savings.

Of course, we've all probably seen the internet meme that says "Growing your own tomatoes is the best way to devote 3 months of your life to saving $2.17". While it generates a laugh, even from me, it's far from the truth. Yes, there may be an element of truth in it at some level if you're going to a lot of trouble to raise one plant. Aside from the humor of it though, at todays prices, $2.17 would cover the cost of the first handful of tomatoes you pick this season. As a matter of fact, I had to buy some tomatoes just the other day for our family breakfast when all the kids and grandkids were visiting. The price? $2.49 for a bag of 4. That didn't include the two $1.29 peppers and the small bag of $2.79 onions. I could fit the entire purchase into my two hands. I fully expect to get bushels of vegetables from our garden this year and intend for much of it to be preserved by way of canning, freezing and drying, for fall and winter use. I don't plan to really document the poundage of produce, but I will no doubt, track the count of stored up goods as the seasons harvest is complete. I may even attempt a cost comparison just to see how much we didn't spend at the produce department of the store this year. It will be a lot like planting pennies and harvesting dollars.
