May 7 - The Campfire Trail - A NEW Garden Installment

Day 949 of the Adventure

We've been waiting for almost a year to get our greenhouse set up. Our enthusiasm overpowered our better judgement when we ordered it. We were nowhere near ready last year, but thought we could be pretty quickly. If you've been following our garden area prep, you'll know by now that wasn't happening! At least not until we had several months to devote to the clearing out of some of the forest and prepping the whole space. Well, that's done now and yesterday, we finally dragged out the supplies to begin the assembly. Obviously, as of the end of yesterday, it's not complete. We ran out of day and energy. That will change today as we are expecting beautiful weather and nothing better to do on our schedule. 

Years ago, probably about 40 years, we built a makeshift greenhouse attached to the front of our house. It was a "lean-to" type of structure. It was meant for growing, but also to provide a warm space separating our cold, uninsulated, brick house from the outside winter temps. In Iowa, every little bit helps, and it did help. We set up some 55 gallon barrels for thermal mass, painted flat black and filled with water. Those absorbed the sun's heat during the day and radiated warmth through the night. There is no such elaborate plans for this hoop house. It's simply a single function garden accessory meant for growing plants. It's measurements are 10 feet wide by 20 feet long. Today we'll have the covering installed on it and get it secured. I have no doubt, there will be something growing in it by the end of the day!
