February 10 - The Campfire Trail - The 90 Days Until Spring Ritual May Have Died!

February 10, 2025

Day 1,228 of the Adventure

For the past dozen or so years, I've been in the middle of a "Countdown until Spring" ritual at this time of year. It's been a mental fitness exercise of mine to keep me sane until March first. I know that spring does not officially occur unto March twenty first, but here in SW Missouri, we are essentially into the spring season by March. Usually, the local daffodils are peeking up through the leaves by mid to late February. Even though they may get bit by some frost, they are pretty hardy and don't seem to mind. We even have a family of them that push their way up through the parking lot pavement every year at the treehouses. Tough little things, these daffodils! When I see daffodils, I know I can probably stow the Carhartts and clean up the firepit for nice weather. My ritual began shortly after we bought our first bunch of old resort cabins, I found out pretty quickly that "resort town" cabins were not very well equipped for winter. Winter became an ongoing challenge every year to keep things from freezing up and breaking. There was not a year that went by that I wasn't out in the frigid weather fixing something that had frozen and broke. Thus, my 90 day countdown until spring would commence on December 1 and end on March 1. It was the day I felt I could finally breathe a sigh of relief and not concern myself with preventative winter cold measures.

This year, I have finally been able to ignore my countdown ritual. Here at our cabin, everything is designed for cold wither weather and very little thought goes into worrying about it. The only single prep we had to make was making sure the cement blocks we've laid up for the beginnings of our basement wall were all filled in with concrete prior to a hard freeze. Which we were able to complete before the first freeze-up. In fact, it was only now that I realized that I was already 72 days into my 90 day countdown. Not bad. Now, by the time I got started, I only have 18 days left! I feel like I missed out on some real opportunity to worry about things freezing up. Oh Well, I can always look forward to next winter........... Yeah..... That could happen!
