Why we have "Grid Back-Up"! Those who claim to be "Off-Grid" have varying degrees of what is required to be legitimately "Off-Grid". Technically, off-grid means no grid connection whatsoever! In its purest sense, this is true and the only ones who want to take the argument to the next level are the off-grid purists themselves. To me, I'm okay with that definition and I'm also okay with not living up to that standard. Our property is not 100% off-grid but is off-grid in its primary function. The grid provides back up to our power source redundancy. Part of that was by necessity and part by practicality. When we began our backwoods journey. I knew nothing about alternative power sources. We knew we would be consuming lots of power when building out our homestead, at least for a while. We were also dealing with this odd dynamic of getting our property establish from a raw land status to an actual address which.......... don't even ask of why that all works the way it does. So, nevertheless, we added grid to our property. As an alternative to our solar, it's a lower cost convenience to when sun is not shining. From a practical application, it's a lower cost way of providing high volumes of power when we are operating tools and equipment that draw a lot of power. With that said, we have found that keeping a grid connection serves us well for the time being.
