More Rain and More COW's - July 14

July 14, 2025

Day 1,382 of the Adventure

We were stuck inside for most of the day today due to rain. What was forecast as a "sprinkle" turned into several hours of downpour. The upside to regular rain has been the mushroom crop around here. Shelley was out picking a big Chicken of the Woods (COW) I found near her Jeep. I spotted several others around the property that are not quite big enough to harvest yet.  I think there is a season for these things and it's "not winter". It seems that once warm weather arrives, we'll find them off and on all spring, summer and fall. Most of this one is destined for the freeze dryer. I snuck a small handful to cut up in a pot of mushroom soup that I ate for lunch today. These are easy to spot in the woods. Once you get past the anxiety of learning to identify them, you can enjoy them added into anything that calls for mushrooms. They are very mild, have a meaty texture and will take on the flavor of whatever you are cooking them with.

Carry On

Adventure Quote: “Food is one of the best things about being alive.
Not just food. Good food. There is a chasm between sustenance and satisfaction, and while she spent the better part of three hundred years eating to stave off the pangs of hunger, she has spent the last fifty delighting in the discovery of flavor. So much of life becomes routine, but food is like music, like art, replete with the promise of something new.” ― V.E. Schwa
