Day 1,419 of the Adventure
I recently heard this term (Legacy Mission) used by Joel Salatin, the godfather of homesteading. He was referring to those who make a commitment to building up a small farm or homestead with the intent of achieving greater self-sufficiency or independence from large scale "systems". If you try looking up the term, you will find a lot of descriptions and definitions, but none are really what he was referring to. He used the term when describing the amount of work and vision typically needed to build up a generational property related to homesteading or farming. It's something that can be overwhelming in the amount of work required. In fact, many would consider the work to simply be too much to be worth it. This is where the vision part over-rides the work part. When the vision is one of "legacy building" rather than "homestead building", then suddenly the paradigm changes from a task list to a legacy vision. Or, in other words, a "mission". A "Legacy Mission" is something that is larger than the sum of the accumulated work involved. It implies a purpose lasting beyond a lifetime to serve subsequent generations. When I heard him say this, a lightbulb flickered on in my head. It's the notion of what we've been doing but had not put it into words. Legacy Mission, where the true mission of the endeavor is to truly create and leave a legacy.
Carry On
Adventure Quote: “Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built, or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there. It doesn't matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away. The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said. The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime.” ―
