Day 34 - 331 Days To Go
26 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost up the Creek (Sumatra)
We arrived in Marathon Key, Florida yesterday afternoon and spent a good part of the day relaxing. This morning, with wind in the forecast, we decided to venture out into the ocean to the Marathon Lighthouse even though we expected rough and choppy water. To our surprise, the winds were mild and water calm. With no more thought than a quick look at the forecast updates, we turned right and headed to Key West. I heard Mike declare "We have enough food, water and fuel on board, what else do we need?" Well, as we discovered later, more fishing gear would have been helpful. But in his defense, we really hadn't planned on being gone for three days.
We managed to rummage up a dozen hooks or so, and there were 4 rods on board so the fishing was on! We cruised at trolling speed down the string Keys enjoying a warm breeze. At one point, several bottle nose dolphins decided to join us and swim just off the bow of the boat. They followed, or actually, lead the way for several miles before breaking off and leaving us to our course. We did see several more throughout the day shadowing our boat. They may have even come close, but I had already had enough excitement trying to film the first bunch while hanging off the front of the boat.
Our arrival at Key West was late in the afternoon. We cruised several harbors looking for an anchorage for the night. Man of War Harbor became or stopping over point for the night. It had a beautiful view of the sunset to the west of us. The night ended with us feasting on Stone Crab claws which Mike and Adreane provided. Stone Crab claws are a delicacy and we now know why. They are delicious. The Crabs can have one claw harvested and then must be returned to the ocean. The claw will re-grow leaving the crab unharmed.
The Treasured Times boat is a 52 foot long Vitech Flybridge Motor Yacht. It can accommodate a crew and up to 4 guests in private staterooms. We have been planning a trip to "test drive" the private adventure charter business they are planning. Todays trip to Key West was a perfect start to our "test run".
Tomorrow.......... Sunken Ships!
