September 13 - DIY Homestead - Our Heat Is On The Way

September 13, 2022

Day 347 of the Adventure

We are definitely waking up to a little more of a chill in the air these days. It's gone from mid to upper 70's at sunrise, to a short spell of 60's and now we are seeing mid 50's for sunrise temps. It certainly makes for a comfortable fire in the mornings. Most of this week is consumed with getting our annual tax prep finished up and filed. I hate that time of the year. For most, this happens in mid April but it seems like we never get them done until mid September. Oh well, just a couple more days of headaches and it will be over again until next year.

While taking a much-needed break from the desk and mountain of files, we made a run to pick up one of the next major components of the Homestead. A Woodstove! I'm in my 60's now and one thing I guess I'll never get used to is the fact that almost nobody carries anything in stores anymore. At least anything of significance. I suppose that's just a sign of our times. We had to order the stove itself although they did have the chimney components in stock. If the stove makes it here when its supposed to, we'll be working on an installation of it next week. All I have to show for it at the moment is a stock image from the internet. Hopefully, it will arrive when it's supposed to and we'll have some real pics to share.

We've used wood heat in several of our homes over the years. I've always preferred that to any other heat source. It seems to penetrate every space of a home with warmth unlike forced air furnaces do. It's been close to 30 years since we've used a legitimate wood stove for heat and I can't wait to fire one up again as our main source. Like everything else we've done here, we will have a back-up source of heat as well. Although since the secondary source will require electricity, I'd prefer that it never gets used!

Carry On
