Day 390 of the Adventure

The smell of wood smoke in the Fall mingled with all the other aromas of Autumn is just too good to resist. Shelley and I have been working on the back side of the cabin today and there was a bit of a debate over staring a fire there. She said the leaves were too close to my choice of fire site. I said they were close but too wet to be a problem. I prevailed but my claim of "too wet leaves" proved to be a problem as well. All the fire mostly wanted to do was smolder. Our smaller fire footprint finally dried enough to provide the respectable fire I was looking for. Just something to add the right atmosphere to life in the woods.

While we work and then relax outdoors, we have a pot of beef and vegetable stew simmering on the wood stove in the cabin. It will become this evening's dinner. Capturing the complexion of the backwoods and lifestyle it involves is a wonderful pass-time. It's shortly before dusk as we sit here enjoying the evening. Some of the night sounds are also presenting themselves. To some, the backwoods life only registers a few clicks up the "Peaceful Life Meter". For me, it rates quite high and near the top. I remember years ago when our campouts were mostly primitive tents under the stars. An evening by a fire then was always accompanied by statements declaring how good life would be if every night was a night like that. I'm finally beginning to experience the wonder of life in the woods and not just the campout in the woods. It suites me just fine. For us, this was the right thing.....
