Day 409 of the Adventure
Today is Monday and deer season has been open for two days. Shelley took a deer late in the day on Saturday and wanted to add another one, if possible, to our freezer cache of venison. Knowing they tend to show up late in the afternoon, she headed out onto the back deck around 4pm, rifle and binoculars in hand. I, on the other hand was watching football just a few feet away but inside the warmth of the cabin. I figured I would perhaps go set up a camera on the deck to see if anything was to be captured on video. No more than 15 minutes into her hunt. POW! I grabbed a camera and rushed to the back door and there's Shelley, pointing down into the woods. AREADY?????? Are you Serious?????? Sigh......... I never had it that easy! Oh well, there she was, deer number two was down.
I think the only regret she had was whether harvesting two instead of just one would deplete the herd too much around our place. It had been a while since we had seen more than four of them hanging around. Fast forward to this morning. As we were eating breakfast and drinking our morning coffee, she wandered to the back door and excitedly declared....DEER! I grabbed a camera and hurried to the back door. Sure enough, two of them standing just beyond the deck in the woods eating acorns. Then there was more movement to the left of the cabin, three more were coming into view. So, there they were, five more working their way around the back yard woods. They were literally a stone's throw away. As of now, our back yard has become friendly once again to the local deer herd. Even though we could technically harvest several more between the two of us, The pair that Shelley has hanging in the tree are enough in my opinion Mostly because we now have task ahead of processing them for the freezer. The "Work" part of the process is about to commence.
Just another day in the Self-Sufficient Lifestyle in the Back Woods!
