November 4 - DIY Homestead - A Reflextion of the Journey

November 4, 2022

Day 399 of the Adventure

The deck building is marching forward today. We are beginning to get a feel for what it will be like once it's done. Of course, our construction zone look still dominates our views. Hopefully, that will start to come to an end before too much longer.

For some reason, I feel like reflecting back on the project so far. The initial excitement of starting all of this is still there but it has changed a little. Our imagination of what we believed all of this would look like has certainly given way to more of a reality now. Occasionally, I will remember what we walked into when we first visited the property. It was all trees, rocks and wilderness. All of that still exists beyond the footprint of our cabin area. Everything immediately surrounding the cabin has become much more......civilized, maybe is the word. We have left the woods to our northwest intact right up to a few feet from the cabin, and now the deck. I try, for at least a, hour or so each day, to sit quietly and simply absorb the ambiance of nature here. It was easy in the beginning when it was nothing but wilderness and is becoming easy once again now that the frantic construction details are getting finished up. There are still days where I feel like I'm scrambling to catch up with undone tasks before winter arrives, but whether I do or whether I don't I suppose won't change anything. So the first rule in building a cabin in the woods is: Relax, enjoy the morning coffee, enjoy the campfires, enjoy the beauty of nature and enjoy the journey.

Carry On
