November 9 - DIY Homestead - The Cheapest Shutter You will EVER Build

November 9, 2022

Day 404 of the Adventure

Among all of the necessary projects we have on our list, a few things fit purely into the "extra" categories. Moose antlers are one of those indulgences. Pine Tree Shutters would have to be another. There's absolutely no practical reason for shutters here. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever seen real functioning shutters anywhere.....ever. Maybe other than on the kid's house in Florida where hurricane shutters are common. Even those though are not shutters like we think of when we talk shutters. So, what's the purpose other than for looks. EXACTLY. There are no real reasons for them other than looks. But sometimes, looks in itself is necessary......... I guess!

We inherited these pine tree shutters from a project that was being upgraded at the treehouses. They were destined to be tossed onto a fire and we rescued them. Shelley is now in the process of repainting them to match our cabin trim. The secret to these particular shutters is their ease to build and their low cost and I'm talking REALLY low cost. Each shutter is made from a single "dog-ear" fence picket. Pre-pandemic price was about $1.50. Now they are about $2.25 each. They take about 5 minutes to construct and another 5 minutes if you decide to cut a pine tree profile into them. There were only enough left overs for two windows so we will need to build more. They will be added to the cabin soon and from the looks of it, probably just in time for Christmas. I'm not sure if we will have pine tree shutters or Christmas tree shutters for our cabin. They look a little more like Christmas to me. Oh Well........

Carry On
