Day 433 of the Adventure

Last night I stepped out the door to get a piece of firewood to stoke our indoor fire up a bit. The time was about 2am. It's a step out into the dark I've made just about every night for the past month or so. This time, however, I experienced something completely different and unexpected. Something bounded off into the darkness away from the cabin. The sound of it actually originated from near the campfire pit about 30-40 feet away from the door. It was far too dark to see what it could have been. I originally thought..... Deer! but while I rummaged around the wood pile by the glow of the porch light, I began to have second thoughts. The idea that a deer may have been loitering about, did not affect me at all. I've startled plenty of deer from around the cabin, but this didn't sound like that. Too heavy and slower. The thought of it being something else did make my hair stand up slightly.

It's no secret that there are bears around our neck of the woods. I just have not seen sign of any right around our place. Not saying there are none. I just haven't seen evidence of any. I looked for tracks this morning but could find nothing. I guess for now, this will have to remain a mystery. As long as "Running Away" is it's response, I'm good with that. If "Coming Closer" ever becomes the response, I'll need to have a new plan ready. That plan may indeed include me running away!
