December 9 - DIY Homestead - A More "Civilized" Place to Store Firewood

December 9, 2022

Day 434 of the Adventure

One of the more inconvenient parts of Cabin Life down here is getting firewood in the middle of the night. I don't like bringing wood into the cabin because it always seems like you get a hitch-hiker bug of some kind. Nothing against bugs that mind their business outside. But once they get brought inside, they like it so well, they never want to leave. So, our firewood pile is just outside our front door. Mostly convenient, but you still have to step outside to grab a piece or two. Night time and rain adds to the adventure and if you read yesterday's posting, it can add a bit of mystery and creepiness to the act of grabbing some firewood.

After last night, today we are going to start to remedy the firewood pile issue. I had been planning to build a firewood box on the back deck for a while but had not gotten around to it. Yes, it will still be outside, but no longer a barefoot walk through the dirt, leaves and potential rain and mud to get wood for the night-time fire. It's about two steps from the back door to the wood box and about two steps from the back door to the front door of the wood stove. Of course, what you can see in the picture is the floor of the wood box. (The "box" has yet to be built) The sides will receive a treatment of log siding to match the cabin. The deck side will have doors opening to the wood storage area as will the back side. It stands about four feet above the ground so loading it from the ground side will be easy with the front-end loader of the tractor. At least to lift it to the right height. Once stacked inside the wood box, the "in-feed" side of the box can be closed to keep the squirrels and weather out. When firewood is needed, the front, deck side can be opened to access dry wood and then closed again. The top will include a roof with green shingles to match the cabin. I'm doing a video of it now and claimed the project to be a "figure it out as I go" type of design. All part of the DIY nature of Camp Run-Amuck.
