January 24 - DIY Homestead - Preparing for Snow

Day 480 of the Adventure

With a big snow in the forecast today, we had to commit part of the day to that never-ending task of getting firewood piled up by the cabin. Under normal circumstances, firewood should already be cut and stacked in a protected storage area. With all of the cabin building and related work around here, the formal stacking of firewood never happened. What we do have is random pile of wood all over the place from the clearing of woods and road-building we've been working on since last Winter. There's plenty of it lying around, just not cut to length or split yet. Shelley has laid claim to most all of the machines and equipment around her. The firewood splitter is no exception. We do work it as a team but she gets to choose whether to load and split or off-load and stack. She always chooses load and split unless they are too big to lift. then I get the load and split duty! So today we split up about 2-3 weeks worth of firewood and can look forward to a sauna-like experience in the cabin. (There's another whole story about that!)
