Day 761 of the Adventure
Ideas are the building blocks to self-sufficiency. Some work out pretty good, others don't. I've personally had plenty of them that had to be classified as disasters when all was said and done. Occasionally, we hit upon a winner of an idea. This particular one was birthed last winter as I trudged out into the night-time cold and snow to retrieve firewood for the wood stove. We don't like storing wood in the cabin because of the bugs that will warm up and then crawl out thinking they's just been upgraded to new living quarters. I don't necessarily mind stepping out into the cold but the firewood stack was always inconvenient, under tarps or surrounded by mud if it had rained, or was raining, or snowing.
The brilliant idea was to construct a "wood box" out on the back deck, literally about four steps from the woodstove out the back door and onto the deck. It can be easily loaded from the back yard side through a pair of doors with a tractor bucket load of wood. Then, can be accessed from the deck side through a pair of matching doors. This has reduced the number of treks out into the yard in the dark to zero. It's made the task of retrieving firewood quicker, easier and cleaner. A flip of the flood light switch illuminates the entire deck and wood box. No mud or tarps to deal with, and in seconds, I can be back in the cabin sitting in front of the stove. It was a good idea!
Carry On
Adventure Quote: “Very few things in life can be so exhilarating as a cabin in the middle of the forest and loving life effortlessly while enjoying the smell of freshly ground heaven in your hot cup, in front of a fireplace... Sweet Solitude, you have taught me to live with very little. So very little it turned out to be a luxury.” ―
