February 20 - The Campfire Trail - What Kind Of Gardening Is This?

For about three weeks now, we've been posting a series on getting our garden ready for planting. The biggest problem I see so far is that almost all of it has involved cutting trees down, sawing trees up hauling wood around in the tractor bucket and splitting wood from the trees. Not exactly garden work, you wouldn't think. The reality is that when we bought this place, there was not a single bit of it that was not wooded. Sunlight struggled to reach the ground in anything more than a few square feet.........Anywhere. 

We cleared for the cabin. we cleared for the roads, we cleared for the septic system. None of that was suitable for gardening. Finally, we are now clearing the garden. It's meant the removal of about eight large oak trees and maybe a dozen smaller trees. I hate seeing trees go away, but I also hate the idea of being on a nice piece of land with nowhere to plant a garden. The garden clearing will serve multiple purposes such as a space for a greenhouse (I suppose that's garden related) but also for the rack that will become the permanent home for the solar panel array. It's all something that needed to be done eventually. I guess one major side benefit is that it looks like we will have about five years worth of firewood out of the deal when it's all done.
