Day 871 of the Adventure

Link to Back to the Land Book
Over the years, Shelley and I have pretty much done our best to pursue our dreams however limited we've been in terms of time, finances, energy and other limiting factors. In some ways, we've been able to accomplish much of it by using the principle of "Scaling". Meaning, we've either "scaled up" our plans, or "scaled down" our plans to fit reality. Sometimes the "scale" referred to finding ways to go smaller to fit financial or budget goals, sometimes it meant scaling up income to achieve a bigger financial demand. In either case, the idea of adjusting circumstances to fit a version of our dream was never an obstacle for us. The adventure and pursuit of a dream has always trumped the "play it safe" approach. Even if it meant adjusting the plan and pathway along the way.

The reason I bring this up is important to those with a dream to make a move "Back to the Land". In some ways, we put our back to the land dream on hold for years. It always felt important, but obviously never became important enough to act upon. Until recently. I suppose the aggravation of having the government tell me to shut my business down during Covid was the last straw. The reality though was that there were plenty of good reasons to make the move towards self-sufficiency long before that. Waiting was a true regret. Looking back, all of the reasons we never made the move to the "Back to the land" lifestyle earlier simply were not worth the reasoning behind them. Probably the biggest was the "I can't afford it" reason. The reality of that is the cost life was not that different. In some ways, we were in a higher cost routine then than we are now. Of course this takes into consideration that we've been able to reduce costs significantly through self-sufficient measures.

All things being equal, or at least mostly equal, choosing the back to the land life is something we should have done much earlier. What would you do?
