February 7 - The Campfire Trail - Family Friendly.... Or Is It?

I had to laugh as I was browsing different homestead and off-grid websites recently. One of them added the "Family Friendly" label to their site. Initially, my brain registered it and moved on. Then it circled back around, and I thought. Aren't we all Family Friendly, or mostly anyway? Then I though a little closer to home. The Campfire Trail is Family Friendly. Or is it? I think we certainly are from a social point of view. However, as I thought about the fact that fires, firearms, semi-heavy equipment and the rare explosion are concerned, maybe we aren't as family friendly as we should be. When coupled with what appears to be, at least from the observer, as an occasional disregard for general safety practices, it could very well be that a "Not suitable for children without parental supervision" disclaimer should be applied. 

It's not that we are trying to set a bad example or anything like that. It's just that the term "Unconventional" applies to our activities a lot more than you would think it should. That's a kind and generous way of putting it. Conventional solutions are not always available when being involved in treehouse building, for example. While all of our endeavors are not as flamboyant as treehouse building, we still encounter the "head-scratcher" situations on a regular basis that require unconventional solutions. I'm thinking of one in particular that required Shelley to use a shotgun to remove a limb from a tree!
