February 6 - The Campfire Trail - A Startling Reality Hit Today

February 6, 2024

Day 858 of the Adventure

A Tree in the state of "TIMBER"
I had mentioned yesterday that garden season was rapidly approaching and then it hit me! Garden season is rapidly approaching! My problem was that last year, it blew right on past us and we weren't prepared for any of it. Shelley planted a few seeds on our big dirt pile of topsoil we had been collecting and that became our garden. Or "Joke" of a garden. It did produce the best it could but since it was two months late, too much shade, no preparation whatsoever, we couldn't really complain. The garden area we've chosen is near the shipping container and is basically still nothing more than raw woods and a canopy of trees. The realization that Spring is racing towards us once again startled me. If we didn't start getting it ready....... and NOW, we would be right where we were last year. I grabbed a camera, told Shelley to meet me up the hill and out the door I marched.

Our garden area firstly needs to be cleared of trees, both large and small. Until that happens, nothing else can be accomplished. Why? We have a hoop style greenhouse that needs constructed. There's a perimeter fence to be built to keep the deer out. Our solar panels will be installed along the fence on the north side, facing south. I have a 275 gallon IBC tote to set atop a "water tower" frame (yet to be built) A water collection system needs to be attached to the container to capture rainwater. And...... last but not least, we've decided to use raised bed style growing areas and those need to be built. Building any of that before removing the trees would invite disaster. How's that for things to do between February 6 and planting season. It will certainly be a stiff challenge but I think we can pull it off.

March 31st will be our deadline to get it all done. There are eight Sundays between now and then. Our goal is to shoot video of the whole process and upload episodes to the YouTube channels each Sunday morning. We began the work today with the removal of three big trees and a number of smaller ones. There's still four large trees to come down and clean up but the process has begun! Watch for video of it all this coming Sunday at: "The Campfire Trail".
