March 7 - The Campfire Trail - The Ozarks A.K.A. Tree

March 7, 2024

Day 888 of the Adventure

Spring comes early in the SW Missouri Ozarks. In fact, many of our blooming trees have been at it for a couple of weeks now going back into February. I'm very familiar with the usual suspects that arrive early. There's Forsythia, Red Bud, Dogwood and other not so native species. Bradford Pear starts early and is very pretty even though it's considered invasive. Wisteria is gorgeous but will strangle the life out of anything it gets near it. It's why I keep my distance. But the one that seems to pop out first is a white blossoming tree that I have never figured out what it is. Since from a distance, it looks like there's popcorn all over the tree, I call it a "popcorn Tree". We have quite a number of them on our place and they are an excellent sign that things are about to go green.

As far as a name is concerned, even the University of Missouri refers to them as "The little tree with many names" If it is what they say it is, it's a "Downy Serviceberry" Other common names include "Sarvis, "Juneberry", "Saskatoon", "Sugarplum" and "Shadbush". Honestly, I only "think" I've figured something out here. The same article says this little tree has over 35 common names. No wonder you can't get it figured out, with that many aliases. It's like the darn thing is trying to hide from the Mob or the government. (maybe that's the same thing) If I ever see it wearing dark sunglasses, I'll know for sure that it evading someone or something. In any case, Popcorn tree is what I'll likely call it since I'll never remember any of it's A.K.A. identities. Although, "Saskatoon" is something that is a unique sounding name. It also would allow me to pretend to be an expert in something I really don't know anything about or have any idea what I'm talking about ............. Such is the Mysteries of life!
