Day 887 of the Adventure
I guess that one way of getting rid of frustration is to dig some holes. Not just any holes. Some good old fashioned Missouri post holes. Holes where you can often encounter basketball sized rocks right where the post needs to go. Yes, we have a post hole digger on the back of the tractor but that is no match for a small boulder. There is only one solution and that is with the use of a rock bar and lots of energy.
We moved here from Iowa back in 1993 and included in my arsenal of tools was a hand powered, auger style post hole digger. I was proud of that PHD. It had allowed me to rapidly dig hundreds of holes over the years......... in soft black dirt. Upon arriving in south Missouri, it became a joke. If it ever scraped together even a half inch of Missouri dirt, it would be a miracle. Missouri dirt, clay and rocks laughed when they saw me coming with my PHD. After only 10-15 minutes of effort, I learned that I would need to trade my PHD for some "Brute Strength and Awkwardness". No amount of twisting, pressure or colorful language would ever accomplish anything here. Missouri holes require a rock bar and a clamshell PHD. You can't actually dig anything with the clamshell. That is reserved exclusively for removing the small amounts of material you have at the bottom of the hole after each of your extended assaults on it with the rock bar. Digging post holes in Missouri is a "Conan the Barbarian" looking affair to watch it.
You may begin to wonder about the augur on the back of the tractor if auguring is such a futile attempt at hole digging. Well, when connected to 25 horsepower, even most of Missouri rocks and clay will relent. That is until a rock anything larger than a grapefruit is encountered. Then it's back to the rock bar and clamshell. The sole benefit of working a rock bar is that it provides a whole new level of frustration that quickly and easily replaces any other current frustrations. By the end of the day, you are too tired and worn out to try to remember why you even decided to divert your frustrations to post hole digging in the first place!
