April 13 - The Campfire Trail - Another Self-Sufficiency Rant

April 13, 2024

Day 925 of the Adventure

I'm feeling a little bit of a need to go on another of my rant's about the economy and how it relates to the idea of self-sufficiency. I saw a news report the other day that gave out a statistic regarding the number of people who are relying upon credit cards to pay for groceries. Which in all reality, I've done that for years out of convenience rather than necessity. However, this report was talking about the use of credit cards as a final option to actually be able to supply groceries and other basic necessities for keeping food on the table and other bills paid. I can remember different times in life where we had to resort to similar measures. I hated that! Most of the time with us, it was a temporary adjustment we had to make to get through some unexpected expenses. This, however, is not that. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, we are not struggling financially so the rant is not so much from a personal experience perspective this time. The problem is that I remember the times when we were. Now, I look at the pressure from an inflationary economy and I'm feeling the pain of watching friends and family deal with the effects of it. I think it's become a "Crusade" for me at this point.

There's never a time when self-sufficiency is a bad idea and we've decided to find as many ways as possible to achieve that lifestyle. If you've been following our journey, you'll know we are in the middle of a garden set-up right now. Other features of self-sufficiency since arriving here has been wood heat and solar power. Although the solar power is down right now until the garden fencing is complete. (We will be using the fence as part of the mounting structure for the panels) I encourage developing a greater sense of self-sufficiency in life not only to ward off the current economy but to also become better prepared for the unknowns of the future.
