June 20 - The Campfire Trail - Pickle Time

Day 993 of the Adventure


Canning time has arrived at the cabin. The growing accumulation of cucumbers have left us no choice but to get started, with or without the summer kitchen. To me it did not look like we had enough to make one batch but as it turns out, we were able to get two nice batches of pickles made. 32 pints in all. Half are called "Zesty Bread and Butter Pickles" and the other half is "Hot Spicy Pickles". Dills will be on the next round I'm sure. The Spicy Hot mixture was a little like brewing up some kind of Chemical Weapon in the cabin, complete with watering eyes. Something set off the CO2 detector. It was either the pickle spices or all four of the gas burners on the stove on high for half the afternoon. No casualties though, so all is well. The fact that we did not get our Summer Kitchen built did not hinder the operation too badly so I guess we know we can get it done. I calculated up that it's been 32 years since we last grew a garden and I can say it feels good to be putting up produce once again.
