Day 1,230 of the Adventure
Yesterday, I was covering the difficulties of our economy. It began with a friend's posting on social media about the high cost of heating a home. I also addressed the need for choosing to follow a pathway of self-sufficiency as one method of combating high costs of living. It's an idea that is certainly easy to agree with. Somewhat harder to apply to day-to-day life. One way to get all of that started is to simply pick an "easy to implement" idea that helps you gain some cost savings. I'm very big on the garden and canning process for cutting costs and corners. Depending on the time of year and ability to even grow a garden, you may find that a longer-term solution. If something quicker is desired, we may have found an option. One easy cost containment strategy is to buy food in larger, less expensive quantities and preserve it in smaller portions for use later. An example might be buying 20 pounds of hamburger, separating it into one-pound packages and freezing them for later. We've done this will all kinds of food and as long as it's being purchased in a bulk quantity and a lower price, it works. What doesn't always work well is the freezing of things that include trapped air which can lead to frostbite or freezer burn. Recently, we've acquired a vacuum sealer which seems to have eliminated that problem. What good is storing food if it gets ruined in the process, right? Besides being able to handle a bulk purchase now, it's also been handy for simply preparing and storing pre-made meals ahead of time. Cutting back on prep time and making a quick meal possible by simply opening the freezer door. We've already pre-prepped a variety of soups, vegetables, sandwiches, breakfast meals and even excess leftovers into convenient meals for a later date. If done with a little forethought, it's easy to see almost immediate savings doing this. We've opted for vacuum products from the "Out Of Air" company and even saved over the costs of other suppliers by going that route. It's a method I've wanted to try for a while but just haven't. Out of Air offered to let us try some of their bags and offer a discounted price to anyone that was interested in trying them out for themselves. The discount runs through February 28, so if it's something you're interested in, give them a try before then. Here's a link to their website:
