How This Works - Part 6 - May 1

May 1, 2025

Day 1,308 of the Adventure

A large part of the culture of self-sufficiency includes the practice of growing and preserving food. Our efforts are pretty much limited to growing garden produce and hunting wild game. Just these two activities make up for probably close to 40 percent of our food requirements. We are also ramping up our natural foraging skills, but so far that has been limited to three or four varieties of mushroom along with a little bit of Sassafras Root. Vegetables from the garden make up the bulk of our food raising. Raising a garden is just the first step. Our intent is to enjoy fresh vegetables throughout the growing season and preserve the rest for later use. Preservation includes Water Bath Canning, Pressure Canning, Drying, Freeze Drying and Freezing. Different techniques work better for some things over others, but between them all, everything we harvest has at least one method of preservation to go along with it. before embarking on growing and preserving, food self-sufficiency can seem complicated and daunting. It's not that difficult and a very rewarding part of homestead life.
