Day 1,309 of the Adventure
This posting is not for everyone! It's really only for those who are dreaming of pursuing the self-sufficient life. Self-sufficiency is more than just a lifestyle. It could almost be considered a "Cause". A cause that compels you to stretch yourself beyond the normal boundaries of modern life. I'm not even sure that an "end-goal" can be very well defined. It's more of a process and a journey. One that takes you into a life that is less dependent upon others and other systems. These other systems can be governments, economies, even the weather patterns. Self-sufficiency also embraces elements of basic preparedness. Preparedness for the events that occur from these various systems. A commitment is required, because self-sufficiency is an uphill course. It takes a level of determination to achieve. Dependency tends to be a downhill, much easier route because it takes very little effort to become dependent upon conveniences.
The fable of "The Ant and the Grasshopper" teaches the importance of preparation and diligence. A grasshopper, enjoying the summer with singing and dancing, ignores the ant's advice to store food for winter. When winter arrives and the grasshopper is hungry, the ant, who has been preparing, refuses to help. In many ways, the commitment to self-sufficiency is an "Ant and Grasshopper" story. Don't be afraid to be committed to your cause if the self-sufficient life is something for you.
