Day 1,374 of the Adventure
Some of you may have seen the posting I did a while back on a solar power system class we were planning to conduct later this year. It's intended to be something to get your feet wet on if you are wanting to learn more about solar power. When I knew nothing about it, Mike, (my electrical genius, son-in-law) sent me some basic components to play around and experiment with. Those items gave me my first basic understanding of how the world of solar power works. It was small but very helpful as a learning tool. Now, we run a 12,000-watt system large enough for our cabin and house. We decided to offer a beginner solar class, complete with a similar system that I started with for each participant to take home with them. Mike has been experimenting with various components and has come up with a combination that seems to work pretty good and is easy to set up and operate. The picture is of the inverter, charge controller, circuit breaker and wires. The panel is outside, and I have not connected batteries to it yet. I plan to run lights, chargers for all my battery-operated tools and various tools on the house building we're doing to see how it performs. This small system will be adequate to run basic emergency related things as well. Like a refrigerator in the event of power loss. You can't run an entire house (or really even part of a house) with it, but it's an excellent way to put yourself through a solar learning curve. If you're interested in receiving more information on the workshop when we get details together, here's a sign-up link.
