Day 1,376 of the Adventure
I think that our choice to move to the backwoods can be summed up in one statement. Big Decision - Small Steps. It feels like it's the culmination of a life's worth of dreams, plans, false starts and finally just making the decision that it's now or never. At least that's the way it feels for us. In some ways, we waited too long. We didn't begin this chapter of our story until we were both in our 60's. Now a little over three years into it, we are 64 and 66 years old and just now beginning the process of building our house. I suppose this is where the "small steps" part of the equation serves its purpose. At our age, everything is more difficult and time consuming than it used to be. Fortunately, if the fire still burns brightly, allowances can be made for the age and difficulty level. In fact, I think I'm going to begin saying that I've achieved "Level 64" rather than 64 years old. That way the emphasis will be on the 64 years-worth of life experience I've conquered to get to where I am today. Which is building a house from scratch with my wife who is operating at Level 66. We know we can do it. We opened up raw land just three years ago. Built a cabin as a temporary dwelling. Installed the water system, septic system, solar system (that sounds big, doesn't it?) constructed a huge garden area. and now we've entered into the house building phase. If a retirement project was needed, we certainly found one that will serve us well for years to come. If you'd like to see the progress from the beginning, we have hundreds of YouTube videos of it. (
