Day 1,390 of the Adventure
It's been slow going on the summer kitchen part of the house for the past week or so. Rain slowed us down a little for a while then the heat set in. We've been getting all of the little time-consuming details done prior to starting the shingles on the roof for days. A lot of that had to do with digging your fingernails into the sides of the building close to 20 feet above the ground in some places. What might be a 10-minute job standing on the ground, for me, may become 45 minutes hanging off a ladder that high up. Parts of this work is just not meant for "old guys". Nevertheless, most of that finally got done and yesterday, we were able to get the starter run of shingles installed. This morning in the early twilight, we began running shingles in earnest. By 6am, we were climbing ladders. By 9am, the sun was full on the roof where we were working but the shingles were done on the south-facing side. Tomorrow, we plan for the same routine on the north facing side of the roof. The sun hits earlier there due to the position of the trees, but we also don't have to start that side while standing on ladders. On the north side we can stand on the stairwell roof putting the main roof eaves at "workbench" height. Green Side Up is the rule of the day!
