Day 1,369 of the Adventure
With the floor firmly in place over the storm shelter, it's time to have a look at it from a new perspective. The wires coming out of the wall are for the service panels. One set for a grid hook-up, the other is for our solar plant connection. The solar will serve 80 plus percent of the house. The grid is mainly for back-up. Most sane people run one set of connections and just establish grid back-up through the solar equipment. The one case we had of an inverter failure has me working a back-up system to that via a second "grid only" service panel. This section of basement is completely concrete filled walls with horizontal and vertical steel rebar reinforcement. The top of the concrete block wall has threaded anchors extending all the way through the upstairs floor and through the kitchen's lower wall plates. Making this room our storm shelter. When not protecting us from tornadoes, it will serve as a food storage room or "Pantry". It will contain shelves for canned and freeze-dried goods that we've preserved for later use.
