Yesterday, I jumped into the subject of a recent book I've read concerning a "Grid-Down EMP event" and the fall-out of it as it relates to the survival challenges connected to it. For the most part, the trigger event to this was an EMP attack large enough to disable the entire grid system of the nation along with virtually all electronics. EMP events are real things. As near as I've been able to research, they only really learned about them when doing testing of atomic bombs. They wondered why they were knocking out electrical components in proximity of the detonation. From that time until now, reliance upon electronics has been integrated into nearly everything and so an EMP now would affect nearly every aspect of life involving anything with electronic components. This includes travel/transportation, basic utilities and communications. The book does a good job connecting the dots between the event and the aftermath of it. Food, water, medical and shelter are the big vulnerabilities. Of course, EMP events are low risk events, while not being out of the question as potentially among the most devastating things we could possibly ever experience. Less cataclysmic would be any kind of "grid-down" events due to overloading of the grid system. Cyber or more conventional terrorist attacks of primary grid components could leave just as big of a "grid-down" problem. Only on more of a regional or isolated scale. Plus, those wouldn't have the added element of electronic failure disrupting transportation and medical services. The book gives us a startling look into the breakdown of society and civilization in the event of a big EMP attack.
