Day 1,387 of the Adventure
I've been doing a four-part review of a book I recently read called "One Second After". It's the story of an entire country affected by an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) event. EMP's are real things but there's a lot of opinions over just how probably that a large one would be. Some say not very probable, other say that a large one is inevitable. I honestly don't know. I would lean towards fairly remote. A large, apocalyptic one would nearly certainly need to be coordinated and deployed in space, so that eliminates a large part of who could actually deliver a large scale event. Still. if a large one were to happen, the effects of it would truly be devastation on a scale that's hard to imagine. I've analyzed our preparedness for an EMP and honestly, I don't think we'd fare any better than most others. So, in reality, our solution would be to take each step the best we could. We are pretty much immune from the need for a heat source for up to three or four years. Our food preservation efforts will sustain us for quite a while. Water could be an issue and is something we would need to address right away. I doubt whether our solar equipment would survive so electricity is not hopeful.......... and so on. BUT...... That assumes there is a nationwide EMP. Anything less than that and the whole picture changes. Practical preparation for a few months without a power grid is something that's honestly, much more likely and much easier to be prepared for. It's been estimated that there are a number of attempts to knock out large regions of grid services each year. So far, none have been successful to any extent. if one were to disrupt an entire region or one of the three grid sectors of the nation, then similar aftermath of an EMP could be experienced on a regional scale. Only without the complete destruction of electronic devices. A preparation plan of three months worth of the basics of food, water, fuel, heat, energy and shelter (perhaps medications) would go a long way at preventing personal calamity. Then again, depending on where you are and what size of an unprepared population lives close to you, all bets could be out the window.
I was fascinated and intrigued by the "One Second After" book and have ordered the other two books in the series. It did not compel me to create a disaster plan around an EMP, but did open my eyes to how easily that society could collapse into near anarchy if people become desperate enough.
