Day 1,403 of the Adventure
The completion of the power cable connections yesterday between the house and the utility shed made way for the next significant part of the house-building project. It was the installation of the pair of breaker panels in the basement. So much of this project is coloring outside the lines of convention. Conventional house construction would opt for a single breaker panel. Why? because convention tells us to connect everything up to the power grid and just be happy with that. It's convenience dominating over practical preparedness and self-reliance. Conventional systems based upon convenience make things easy as long as everything functions as normal. We experienced a winter-time power outage that lasted five days once. I can tell you for certain that the little bit of back-up solutions we had available to us helped but did not give us peace of mind during the outage. Nor did it instill any kind of confidence that another such event would not visit us again at some point. Our whole idea behind the construction design of our "systems" takes into account most any kind of "convenience disruptions". For the time being, we will still continue to utilize grid electrical service, but only as a back-up to our solar plant generated electricity. Thus, two electrical panels. The left one is the off-grid panel and literally 80% of the house will be powered from that part of our system. This method of service has prevented us from being affected by seven grid power outages so far since we've lived here. But in all fairness, the grid saved us from a solar plant failure once as well. Neither system is perfect, but they work well together.
