Day 338 - 27 Days to go
88 Days Until March 1
88 Days Until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Highlander Grogg (Butterscotch/Rum flavor - Also, quickly becoming everyone's favorite flavored Base Camp coffee)
Over the weekend, we had quite a lot of wind. It wasn't necessarily any worse than any other stretch of windy weather. It just happened to finally be that last little push over the limit that was enough to get the walkway on our boat dock all jacked up when a support pin pulled lose from the gangway. That one little event set off a chain reaction (that I suppose I should have expected)
With the tension of the walkway released, the wind was able to push the dock in the downstream direction just a little further than it had in the past resulting in a hinge bolt popping loose where the walkway is designed to flex with rising and lowering water levels. The result was everything just hanging crooked and twisted even though it wasn't really anything very severe at all. The original damage actually happened about four years ago this December when an epic flooding event raised the entire dock higher than the guide posts allowing the whole boat dock to shift in the downstream direction before it settled back in place in the wrong position. THAT, had been the repair I had been dreading every since we bought the Rainbow Haven Resort back in 2016. Fighting the small repairs against the will of the big repair was going to make the whole project much more difficult, so the decision was made to get it all done once and for all. This meant either waiting for another epic flood to raise everything too high once again so it could be pushed back in place.... or, simply cutting things apart that weren't meant to be cut and carefully moving it back to where it belonged. Dave declared at one point; "I've never tried anything like this before". I assured him that none of the rest of us had ever tried anything like this before either so we were all in this together!
After getting it about half done today, we tied it all together for the night and will be back at it in the morning. Stay tuned for tomorrow's update.
