October 16 - DIY Homestead - Cutting Holes in the Roof

 October 16, 2022

Day 380 of the Adventure

It's finally time that we have a decent picture of the cabin. It's not complete yet but at least the front entry side is looking respectable now. I was just finishing up some things outside last night and surprised myself when I approached the front door. Everything about the dusk, lighting and colors stood out to me as "Special" for the first time since we've been here. It was saying "Home".

We have a task before us today that I'll be glad when it gets done. At the same time though, I've kind of been dreading it. It will start with cutting a hole in the roof. It's wood stove installation day here and the hole will be for the chimney. It's not like I haven't done this very thing before. I guess when I was younger and cut holes in the roof, I never really gave it much thought. Now, being older, I think about everything ahead of time and as if anything could possibly go wrong. I'm confident by the end of the day, we will be able to have a glowing fire to sit in front of without incident. Still, the older, cautious side of me is not looking forward to the process.

While sitting by the morning fire, I'm looking at the changing color of the woods. I believe this year, for perhaps the first time in my life, I'm having a different perspective of Autumn. This will be the first time we have been able to spend time on our own land with Fall happening right in our back yard. We've camped in it, hiked in it, hunted in it, but until now, we've never really lived in it. There's a difference that brings a distinct contentment that I've never experienced before. By tonight, we should have the curl of smoke exiting the chimney added to the woodsy atmosphere of our backwoods home. It will be a picture I have seen in my mind a thousand times. Tonight, I'll see it with my eyes........
