Day 833 of the Adventure
We spent yesterday soaking up some good weather and processing more firewood for the woodshed. Partly because we're trying to get a jumpstart on next years wood. (getting it cut, split and stacked so it can spend the year drying) Partly to clean up the two big trees we dropped right behind the cabin that were dead and needed removing. (You can see their removal at this link) Temperatures reached the upper 50's making it a beautiful January day to be working outside. The urgency of getting outside work done was due to the arrival of ugly weather today. It was forecast to arrive in the night sometime as rain and by sunrise it would be snow.
At two minutes after midnight, the sound of wind and thunder woke me up. Another couple of minutes and we were being pounded by rail and hail. Accompanied by lightning and thunder. It was like a springtime storm had just arrived, 30 minutes later it was mostly gone. I noticed the temps were dropping throughout the night as I retrieved wood for the stove at 3am and again around 6am. At 7:30, snow began. What you see in the picture is all that made it here. At least for now. We'll see if any more shows up. The thing I'm not looking forward to is the cold. We are now expecting at least three days of night time temps below zero and daytime temps in the 20's.
I know. We're lightweights compared to many out there. I was a "central Iowan" for a good part of my life and know what it's like to experience days, or even weeks of below zero temperatures at a time. Even as low as -30 or more. But I'm just not that interested in it anymore. As if I ever was in the first place. Sub-zero means stay inside, make sure the wood box is full, (maybe even a little extra stacked around the back deck, make sure there's plenty of coffee, ingredients for "Stove Top Soup" and....... Well, I'm not sure much else is needed. The cabin is tightly built and the stove is certainly up to the challenge of keeping things warm. What else is there? So pardon me while I take a sip of hot coffee and throw another log on the fire!
Carry On
Adventure Quote: “A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.”
