January 2024 ended yesterday and although to me, January's are the LONGEST month of the year, this one seemed to pass in a really big hurry. They say that the older you get, time seems to pass more quickly. My mom had a theory about it. She always said "Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes". I'm not so sure of the science of it, but it does seem to have some merit. 

January is gone and we had our first of the winter, "no fire until morning" event. It's usually something that does not happen until closer to March. It's when the woodstove fire dies out and it never gets cold enough to be worth getting up in the middle of the night to re-start it. Of course, by 6am, there's definitely a chill in the cabin and a corresponding need for heat. I awoke to 64 degrees in the cabin as the sun was beginning to light the sky. Not too terrible for early morning on February 1. A quick trip to the wood-box out back for some kindling and soon a fire was coming to life. By the time the coffee was ready, the warmth was beginning to drive out the cold and we were nearing a comfort level once again. All of this precedes the forecast of 68 degrees today. It's a promise of a beautiful day to be outdoors.
