Day 862 of the Adventure
Sometimes it feels like all we do is work. It's not the case, but it is a big part of life at a cabin in the backwoods. I found myself sitting on a stump several times yesterday as my physical body tried to recover from my mind telling it that cutting trees still something it was capable of doing. I keep telling myself that I could either go to a gym somewhere and work out to keep in condition (using that term very loosely) Or, cut some trees, split some wood, dig a little in the dirt and hike the woods. I believe I'd rather putter around in the woods, garden, workshop and trails than spend time in a gym. Sure, it's effort but besides keeping my "out of warranty" parts working, it's accomplishing some good for our lifestyle. Plus, a lot of it is an outlet for some creative energy that has not seemed to diminish over the years.
Will all of it have been worth it? I don't know. There are many parts of life that have become more important over the last few years. I believe the addition of grandkids tops the list. If our efforts give them a place to create memories, then it's worth it. If establishing a legacy of self-sufficiency for our family happens, it will have been worth it. As long as Shelley and I can sit by a morning, or evening campfire drinking coffee while watching and listening to the stillness of the woods that surround us, it's worth it. I guess that age adds a perspective to life that nothing else does in quite the same way. Importance can be found in much simpler terms and in simple activities. The cutting of trees today, makes way for the possibility of fresh garden produce this summer. Strawberry shortcake is among the things I look forward to. It will also enable us to sit in a warm, woodstove heated cabin next winter, perhaps while a snow is falling in our woods. Finally, it keeps the joints from rusting and seizing up on our 60 plus year old bodies. As a good friend once said. It's better to wear out than rust out.

Adventure Quote: “This is the real secret of life -- to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.” ―
