Day 868 of the Adventure
I'm spending a couple days on what I believe has become, or at least becoming, a lost art. That of building a house. When I was younger, it seemed that I was always seeing people in the middle of building a house for themselves. As a cost saving measure or just a preference, homebuilding was fairly common. I suppose it was already on its way out even back then. Looking at old Sears Catalogs, you could actually buy a house package, receive all the materials and build it yourself. Shelley and I actually owned what we believed to be a "Sears" house as one of our rentals several years ago.
My struggle involved what has caused us to feel it is not something to do anymore. I understand with the construction complexity of modern homes, the skills and equipment may be out of reach for most people. In addition, the larger homes typical for middle class families, would not be a practical undertaking for most. I think I'm probably referring to those who are struggling with how to figure out an economical pathway to home ownership. Building your own just doesn't seem to be on anyone's radar anymore.
Then, my kids popped up with a plan to buy a parcel of land here in the Ozarks and begin building it out as an "escape" get-away from their busy lives. A container home was on their agenda. As they began to explain their plan, I could see the pioneering spirit alive and well in their eyes and minds. Building from scratch. With them it even meant locating and purchasing a backhoe for all the digging and ground-work that would be needed. Excited for them, certainly, but even more, excited to see a younger generation not even giving a second thought to rolling up their sleeves and diving in to a project that was beyond anything they had ever done.
