May 4 - The Campfire Trail - This Was Inevitable

Day 946 of the Adventure

As you can see by the number of days we've been on our property (946), we had not yet had to deal with a venomous snake on the property. And that's not because we haven't been out in the woods, where they might be. We are, however in SW Missouri and there are a number of venomous versions of snake around here. When people ask if there are many, I answer by saying, "They're not everywhere, but they could be anywhere". So it's really important to train yourself to always...... ALWAYS, keep an eye open for them. In over two and a half years we had only even seen about 5 snakes, all harmless up until today. This was not anywhere near our cabin or areas we commonly work in. We had taken the tractor deep into the woods behind the cabin to collect a few rocks for the garden. While driving through a densely wooded and brushy area, I caught sight of a movement on the ground moving away from the tractor. It was small enough to go undetected had it simply lied still. The color and size indicated a copperhead. Upon dismounting the tractor, it was confirmed. I know many say to simply leave the wild things alone and I'm good with that.....mostly. I draw the line at dangerous, and copperheads are definitely that. With grandkids visiting us occasionally, the fewer harmful potential encounters the better. This guy was small, only about 12" long. Still fully capable of inflicting a dangerous bite if provoked. He's no longer with us and I'm okay with that. We could live somewhere completely safe from such dangers, but then we would be missing all the good parts of it that we love so much. In fact, we had a copperhead encounter once right in the middle of town, so.......... Watch out for yourselves.... It's a Jungle out there!
