February 18 - The Campfire Trail - If It's Going To Be, It's Up To Me!

Day 870 of the Adventure

I can remember back in the days of the Cold War with Russia, probably from the 80's. There was a point of pride we Americans had over how our economic system was far superior over the socialist/communist economies of the Soviet system. We all heard the stories of empty shelves and astronomical prices when goods could be found. This point was highlighted to me when a good friend, who was a Marine, had the opportunity to meet a counter-part of his from Russia who had managed to defect to the USA. As he was in the military, their paths crossed once and my friend had a chance to visit with him. During this Russian soldier's entire life, he was lead to believe that the empty grocery stores and high prices were a world-wide phenomenon. Yes, even America suffered under the same conditions. Upon arriving in America, one of his first objectives was to see for himself. Imagine his shock as he entered one store after another, finding shelves full, food easy to buy and nobody clambering all over each other to get what they needed before it ran out. His only reaction to all of it was "THEY LIED TO US!"

Last week, I ran across a video of when Tucker Carlson was in Russia and decided to visit a grocery store there and do an experiment. He and his crew shopped and purchased a similar cart-full of groceries as he would typically purchased back home. As the cart was rung up, the cost of it was a little over $100 compared to a similar cart-full back home that was ringing up at nearly $450. How is it that after the fall of communism and a shift towards capitalism, that the situations could have, not only reversed itself but showed such a stark contrast in costs? Tucker explained several reasons for it, which to me were all interesting. However, his main reaction was "THEY'RE LYING TO US!" referring to all the excuses why food prices are so high here in America. One thing he did not suggest as the reason for it was that the socialist/communist remnants of systems were causing the abundance and low pricing.

To be sure, the economics we are experiencing are certainly to blame. Yet economics is something that can be corrected. Assuming we are willing to adopt policy that will begin to reverse things. Something I do not see any willingness to do at the moment. Why?....... I believe just like so many other facets of American politics, it is about politics with each side willing to sacrifice our standard of living to gain the advantage of control.

Last month, I went into a rant regarding the cost of a tube of 8 biscuits being nearly four dollars, I believe it was $3.79 if I remember. Today I was in the same store and the same can was now $4.35. Biscuits!............. $4.35........... A package of hamburger buns was $4.99 for 8. I'm convinced of one thing. Nobody is interested in what's best for us and as a good friend once told me; "If it's going to be, it's up to me!" With that in mind, I'm heading to the garden plot we are developing and get busy clearing it out of trees and underbrush and get that thing ready for Spring planting!
