Day 881 of the Adventure
As the garden project continues, we've got ourselves a glimpse of what part of the water collection system will look like. A 275 gallon IBC tote (Intermediate Bulk Container) yeah, I had to look that up. Still not sure exactly what it means. Bulk container makes sense. I guess "intermediate" refers to it's general size. Anyway, our plan is to string collection gutters around the top of the shipping container to direct rainwater into the tote. Then, let either gravity or perhaps a 12V pump distribute it to the garden beds. By the way, yes, that's a water hydrant in the foreground of the picture. We do have rural water on-site. We would prefer to use rainwater but if that runs low, we can easily use the hydrant. It's just that it will be a typical "city water" source with chlorine (and whatever else they put in it) present. That isn't necessarily terrible, but rainwater would still be better.
Our garden is a high-point of our self-sufficiency efforts down here so it's exiting to see each step of it become a reality. We are closing in on four weeks left of our goal to have it all ready for planting. I believe the biggest challenges will be getting the beds done and the perimeter deer fence built. Since the weather has been cold and rainy for the past few days, progress has slowed to a stall. Beginning this weekend, we are expecting sunny and mid 70's for working and I believe we will begin seeing a lot of progress once again.
