Day 940 of the Adventure

Quick break from the nostalgia of our homeless challenge from two years ago to bring you up to date on some current developments. Last week we picked up the next installment of our "Up-Sized" Solar Plant. Twelve new panels all together. They are 405 watts each which translates into almost 5,000 watts of power. Trust me when I say, that's a lot! We were experimenting with four 325 watt panels through the winter to test the sun exposure in our garden. Because it was an experiment, we used some heavy-duty extension cords for the trial instead of the officially adequate wire leads. At a total of 1,300 total watts, we burned through our wire leads four times before we finally decided that, yes, there was enough sun present to send an adequate amount of power to the Inverter and then on to the batteries.  DON'T WORRY....... We are also upsizing the electrical wire leads as well. It really wasn't meant to be permanent. Just A Test! 

You'll probably notice the garden in the background. Yes, the panel array will become part of the garden landscape. It's the only place on the property where ample sun is needed for both purposes. Once the area was cleared of trees for garden, it became the most natural location for the panel. I'm not quite ready to build the racks for them but that will be coming up pretty soon. We've been paying the electric company for 100% of our power for the past two months and I'm ready to get back to letting the sun do all the work and close the check book back up.
